CHRISTIAN BIOGRAPHIES 2

Christians From the Past on Living the Deeper Life

These Christians who once walked on this earth like we do today lived lives filled with the same struggles that we do today. Our world has so few examples of living the Christian life. Here are examples from the past on how to live a deeper Christian life in these latter days.

Words to Think About

WHAT IS MAN?

13. George Matheson (1842-1906)

George Matheson (1842-1906) Scottish Minister, Theologian, Hymnwriter

ABOUT GEORGE MATHESON

George Matheson (27 March 1842 – 28 August 1906) was a Scottish minister and hymn writer and prolific author. He was blind from the age of 17.

The grave of Rev George Matheson, Glasgow Necropolis

Born at 39 Abbotsford Place in Glasgow, to George Matheson (d.1891), a merchant and Jane Matheson (a second cousin), he was the eldest of eight children.

At age 20, George Matheson was engaged to be married but began going blind. When he broke the news to his fiancée, she decided she could not go through life with a blind husband.

He was educated at Glasgow Academy and the University of Glasgow, where he graduated first in classics, logic and philosophy. In his twentieth year he became totally blind, but he held to his resolve to enter the ministry, and gave himself to theological and historical study. In 1879 the University of Edinburgh conferred upon him the honorary degree of D.D. In 1890, he became a fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, upon the proposal of Sir William Thomson, Robert Flint, Hugh Macmillan and James Lindsay.

He died suddenly of apoplexy (stroke) at Avenell House in North Berwick on 28 August 1906 in Edinburgh and is buried with his parents in the Glasgow Necropolis. The grave lies near the summit. He never married.

Ministry

He was licensed to preach by the Presbytery of Glasgow in 1866 and started as an assistant minister of Sandyford. His first ministry began in 1868 at Innellan, on the Argyll coast between Dunoon and Toward. He stayed 18 years. His books on Aids to the Study of German Theology, Can the Old Faith live with the New?, The Growth of the Spirit of Christianity from the First Century to the Dawn of the Lutheran Era, established his reputation as a liberal and spiritually minded theologian; and Queen Victoria invited him to preach at Balmoral. She had his sermon on Job published.

In 1886, he moved to Edinburgh, where he became minister of St. Bernard's Parish Church in Stockbridge in place of Rev John McMurtrie. Here he did his core work as a minister. He lived slightly south at 19 St Bernards Crescent.

In 1879, he declined an invitation to the pastorate of Crown Court, London, in succession to Dr. John Gumming (1807–1881). In 1881 he was chosen as Baird lecturer, and took for his subject Natural Elements of Revealed Theology, and in 1882 he was the St Giles lecturer, his subject being Confucianism. In 1890 he was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, the University of Aberdeen gave him its honorary LL.D., and in 1899 he was appointed Gifford lecturer by that university, but declined on grounds of health. In the same year he severed his active connection with St. Bernard's.

GEORGE MATHESON QUOTES

I HAVE NEVER THANKED THEE FOR MY THORNS

“My God, I have never thanked Thee for my thorns. I have thanked Thee a thousand times for my roses, but not once for my thorns. I have been looking forward to a world where I shall get compensation for my cross: but I have never thought of my cross as itself a present glory. Teach me the glory of my cross; teach me the value of my thorn. Shew me that I have climbed to Thee by the path of pain. Shew me that my tears have made my rainbow."

- George Matheson (1842-1906) Blind Scottish Minister, Theologian, Hymn Writer

MEN ASK FOR A RAINBOW IN THE CLOUDS

"Men ask for a rainbow in the cloud; but I would ask more from Thee. I would be, in my cloud, myself a rainbow—a minister to others’ joy. My patience will be perfect when it can work in the vineyard"

- George Matheson (1842-1906) Blind Scottish Minister, Theologian, Hymn Writer

O LOVE THAT WILL NOT LET ME GO

"O love that wilt not let me go
The story behind the hymn
O Love that wilt not let me go,
I rest my weary soul in thee;
I give thee back the life I owe,
That in thine ocean depths its flow
May richer, fuller be.

O light that followest all my way,
I yield my flickering torch to thee;
My heart restores its borrowed ray,
That in thy sunshine’s blaze its day
May brighter, fairer be.

O Joy that seekest me through pain,
I cannot close my heart to thee;
I trace the rainbow through the rain,
And feel the promise is not vain,
That morn shall tearless be.

O Cross that liftest up my head,
I dare not ask to fly from thee;
I lay in dust life’s glory dead,
And from the ground there blossoms red
Life that shall endless be."

- George Matheson (1842-1906) Blind Scottish Minister, Theologian, Hymn Writer

GEORGE MATEHSON BOOKS AND SERMONS

One of his hymns, "O Love That Wilt Not Let Me Go," has passed into the popular hymnology of the Christian Church. Matheson himself wrote of the composition:

"I am quite sure that the whole work was completed in five minutes, and equally sure that it never received at my hands any retouching or correction. I have no natural gift of rhythm. All the other verses I have ever written are manufactured articles; this came like a dayspring from on high."

"O Love That Wilt Not Let Me Go" was written on the evening of Matheson’s sister’s marriage. Years before, he had been engaged, until his fiancée learned that he was going blind—that there was nothing the doctors could do—and she told him that she could not go through life with a blind man. He went blind while studying for the ministry, and his sister had been the one to care for him through the years. He was now 40, and his sister’s marriage likely brought a fresh reminder of his own heartbreak. It was in the midst of this circumstance that Matheson penned this hymn, which he said was written in five minutes. British composer Florence Margaret Spencer Palmer set it to music in 1941.

Matheson published only one volume of verse, Sacred Songs. All of which he commented 'I simply followed the impression of the moment' His exegesis owes its interest to his subjective resources rather than to breadth of learning; his power lay in spiritual vision rather than balanced judgment, and in the vivid apprehension of the factors which make the Christian personality, rather than in constructive doctrinal statement. His other writings include :

Can the Old Faith Live with the New (1885)

The Distinctive Message of the Old Religions (1892)

The Psalmist & The Scientist (1887)

Spiritual Development of St Paul (1891)

Words to Think About...

WE CONQUER BY

"We conquer by continuing."

- George Matheson (1842-1906) Blind Scottish Minister, Theologian, Hymn Writer

THE THINGS WE DO TODAY

"The things we do today - sowing seeds, or sharing simple truths of Christ - people will someday refer to as the first things that prompted them to think of Him."

- George Matheson (1842-1906) Blind Scottish Minister, Theologian, Hymn Writer

THE POINT OF GREATEST STRENGTH

"I will have reached the point of greatest strength once I have learned to wait for hope.

- George Matheson (1842-1906) Blind Scottish Minister, Theologian, Hymn Writer

BUT WITH A SONG OF PRAISE

"Thou wouldest not have me accept Thy will because I must, but because I may. Thou wouldest have me take it, not with resignation, but with joy; not with the absence of a murmur, but with a song of praise.”

- George Matheson (1842-1906) Blind Scottish Minister, Theologian, Hymn Writer

HIS IMAGE IS LOVE

"God never gives dominion to any creature which has not received his image. His image is love. Other things belong to God; but God is love. No creature that has not love will be allowed to have a permanent empire. The Father of mercy will not put the reigns of government into a hand that has no heart. Dominion is a very solemn thing; it may oppress, crush, destroy. The Father must have a guarantee for its gentleness. What guarantee can there be but his image - the possession of a nature tender as the Divine?"

- George Matheson (1842-1906) Blind Scottish Minister, Theologian, Hymn Writer

CHRISTIAN LOVE IS THE ONLY KIND

"Christian love is the only kind of love in which there is no rivalry, no jealousy. There is jealousy among the lovers of art; there is jealousy among the lovers of song; there is jealousy among the lovers of beauty. The glory of natural love is its monopoly, its power to say, 'It is mine. ' But the glory of Christian love is its refusal of monopoly."

- George Matheson (1842-1906) Blind Scottish Minister, Theologian, Hymn Writer

WAITING WITH HOPE

"Waiting with hope is very difficult, but true patience is expressed when we must even wait for hope. I will have reached the point of greatest strength once I have learned to wait for hope."

- George Matheson (1842-1906) Blind Scottish Minister, Theologian, Hymn Writer

ALTHOUGH HE BECAME BLIND

Although he became blind, his poems often paint vivid visual images. He was able to discern light and shadow, which is worth considering when reading the following hymn.

They That Wait Upon The Lord

"Lord, at Thy feet my prostrate heart is lying,
Worn with the burden weary of the way,
The world's proud sunshine on the hills is dying, And morning's promise fades with parting day;

Yet in Thy light another morn is breaking,
Of fairer promise, and with pledge more true;
And in Thy life a dawn of youth is waking
Whose bounding pulses shall this heart renew.

Oh, to go back across the years long vanished,
To have the words unsaid, the deeds undone,
The errors cancelled, the deep shadows banished,
In the glad sense of a new world begun!

To be a little child, whose page of story
Is yet undimmed, unblotted by a stain,
And in the sunrise of primeval glory
To know that life has had its start again.

I may go back across the years long vanished,
I may resume my childhood, Lord, in Thee,
When in the shadow of Thy cross are banished
All other shadows that encompass me:

And o'er the road that now is dark and dreary
This soul, made buoyant by the strength of rest, Shall walk untired, shall run, and not be weary, To bear the blessing that has made it blest."

- George Matheson (1842-1906) Blind Scottish Minister, Theologian, Hymn Writer

THERE IS AN EYE THAT NEVER SLEEPS

“There is an eye that never sleeps,

Beneath the wings of night.

There is an ear that never shuts

When sink the beams of light.

There is an arm that never tires

When human strength gives way.

There is a love that never fails

When earthly loves decay.”

- George Matheson (1842-1906) Blind Scottish Minister, Theologian, Hymn Writer

14. Gipsy Smith (1860–1947)

Gipsy Smith (1860-1947) British Evangelist

ABOUT GIPSY SMITH

Rodney Smith ("Gipsy Smith"): Methodist evangelist; born at Wanstead (6 miles northeast of London), Essex, England, March 31,1860. He is of Gipsy parentage, and was converted at the age of sixteen. In 1877 he became an evangelist under the auspices of the Christian Mission of London, and preached successfully in various places, particularly at Whitby, Sheffield, Bolton, Chatham, Hull, Derby, and Hanley. Meanwhile, the Christian Mission had developed into the Salvation Army, and in 1882 Smith was dismissed for a technical breach of discipline. He continued to preach in Hanley, however, but in 1893, after conducting evangelistic services for a time at Hull, made a brief visit to Sweden. Returning to Hanley, he remained there until 1886 when he resigned to resume evangelistic work, being engaged in these labors until the end of 1888. Early in 1889 he visited the United States, conducting services in various cities, returning to England later in the same year and becoming connected with the Manchester Mission. In 1891 he again visited the United States.

In 1892 he conducted services in Edinburgh, and from this grew the Gipsy Gospel Wagon Mission, devoted to evangelistic work among his own people. He visited America for the third time in 1893. After a five months' revival in Glasgow in 1893-94, Smith went to Australia, preaching at Adelaide, Melbourne, and Sydney, after which he returned to England by way of the United States. In 1895 he preached in London, Manchester, Edinburgh, as well as in many smaller cities, and in 1896 paid his fifth visit to America, returning to England and conducting brief evangelistic campaigns until 1897, when he became first missioner of the National Free Church Council. This position he still retains [in 1911], and in this capacity he has conducted revivals throughout England, besides paying still another visit to the United States in 1907. [Gipsy Smith died in 1947].

QUOTES BY GIPSY SMITH

WHEN THE GREAT END OF DAYS COMES

YOU SAY YOU ARE SCEPTICAL WHERE JESUS IS CONCERNED

Words to Think About...

AND IF I KNOW GOD

"If I read my New Testament aright, and if I know God, and if I know humanity, and if I know Nature, then that is God's programme. God's programme is that the whole of life should be permeated with Christ."

- Gipsy Smith (1860-1947) British Evangelist

THERE ARE FIVE GOSPELS

"There are five Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, John and the Christian. Most people will never read the first four."

- Gipsy Smith (1860-1947) British Evangelist

WHAT MAKES THE DIFFERENCE

"What makes the difference is not how many times you have been through the Bible, but how many times and how thoroughly the Bible has been through you."

- Gipsy Smith (1860-1947) British Evangelist

IF YOU ARE IN WITH GOD

"If you are in with God you are out with the world."

- Gipsy Smith (1860-1947) British Evangelist

BUT SAVE A BOY

"You save an old man and you save a unit; but save a boy, and you save a multiplication table."

- Gipsy Smith (1860-1947) British Evangelist

THE WAY TO JESUS

"The way to Jesus is not by Cambridge and Oxford, Glasgow, Edinburgh, London, Princeton, Harvard, Yale, Socrates, Plato, Shakespeare or the poets--It is over an old-fashioned hill called Calvary."

- Gipsy Smith (1860-1947) British Evangelist

I WONDER WHAT WOULD HAPPEN

"I wonder what would happen if the preacher stopped in his sermon next Sunday morning and said, "Have you paid your debts this week?" "In what sort of a temper did you come down to breakfast this morning?"

- Gipsy Smith (1860-1947) British Evangelist

I'M GOD'S MESSENGER

"I'm God's messenger from the gypsy tent. And it's the message that's important, not the messenger."

- Gipsy Smith (1860-1947) British Evangelist

THEY MUST HOLD NOTHING BACK

"If young converts wish to maintain their religious life strong, fresh, and secure, they must throw the whole of themselves into it; they must hold nothing back."

Helen Rosevere (1925–2016)

Helen Rosevere (1925–2016) English Christian Missionary, Doctor and Author

Helen Roseveare (21 September 1925 – 7 December 2016) was an English Christian missionary, doctor and author. She worked with Worldwide Evangelization Crusade in the Congo from 1953 to 1973, including part of the period of political instability in the early 1960s. She practised medicine and also trained others in medical work.

Helen Roseveare was born in Haileybury College in Hertfordshire, England in 1925. Her father was Martin Roseveare, the designer of ration books for the United Kingdom used during the Second World War. Her brother, Bob Roseveare, was a wartime codebreaker. She became a Christian as a medical student at Newnham College, Cambridge in 1945. She was involved with the Cambridge Inter-Collegiate Christian Union, attending prayer meetings, Bible study classes and evangelical events.

After completing her studies, Roseveare applied to WEC to be a medical missionary. In 1953, she went to the Congo, where she was assigned to the north-east provinces. She built a combination hospital/ training center in Ibambi in the early 1950s, then relocated to Nebobongo, living in an old leprosy camp, where she built another hospital. After conflict with other staff at the hospital, she returned to England in 1958.

She returned to the Congo in 1960. In 1964 she was taken prisoner by rebel forces and she remained a prisoner for five months, enduring beatings and rapes. She left the Congo and headed back to England after her release but returned to the Congo in 1966 to assist in the rebuilding of the nation.he helped establish a new medical school and hospital, as the other hospitals that she built had been destroyed, and served there until she left in 1973.

After her return from Africa, she had a worldwide ministry speaking and writing. She was a plenary speaker at the Urbana Missions Convention three times. Her life of service was portrayed in the 1989 film Mama Luka Comes Home. Her touching story about the prayer of Ruth, 10-year-old African girl, for a hot water bottle to save a premature newborn baby after its mother had died has been widely forwarded by email. She survived rape and trial during the Congolese civil war in 1964 because of the intervention of the villagers she had helped previously.

QUOTES BY HELEN ROSEVERE

WE ARE CALLED TO REFLRCT GOD'S BEAUTY

“We are called to reflect the Lord's beauty through our lives as much as through our words, and God will use this in His own perfect time.”

- Helen Rosevere (1925–2016) English Christian Missionary, Doctor and Author

TO BE ALIVING SACRAFICE

“To be a living sacrifice will involve all my time. God wants me to live every minute for Him in accordance with His will and purpose, sixty minutes of every hour, twenty-four hours of every day, being available to Him. No time can be considered as my own, or as "off-duty" or "free." I cannot barter with God about how much time I can give to serve Him. Whatever I am doing, be it a routine salaried job, or housework at home, be it holiday time and free, or after-work Christian youth activities, all should be undertaken for Him, to reveal His indwelling presence to those around me. The example of my life must be as telling as my preaching if He is to be honored.”

― Helen Roseveare, Living Sacrifice: Willing to be Whittled as an Arrow

TO LOVE THE LORD WITH ALL YOUR HEART

“To love the Lord my God with all my soul will involve a spiritual cost. I'll have to give Him my heart, and let Him love through it whom and how He wills, even if this seems at times to break my heart.
To love the Lord my God with all my soul will involve a volitional and emotional cost. I'll have to give Him my will, my rights to decide and choose, and all my relationships, for Him to guide and control, even when I cannot understand His reasoning.
To love the Lord my God with all my mind will involve an intellectual cost. I must give Him my mind, my intelligence, my reasoning powers, and trust Him to work through them, even when He may appear to act in contradiction to common sense.
To love the Lord my God with all my strength will involve a physical cost. I must give Him my body to indwell, and through which to speak, whether He chooses health or sickness, by strength or weakness, and trust Him utterly with the outcome.”

Words to Think About...

IF I TRUELY BELIEVE IN HIM

“If I truly believe in Him, I'll trust Him to desire for me that which is for my highest good, and to have planned for its fulfillment.”

- Helen Rosevere (1925–2016) English Christian Missionary, Doctor and Author

THE LORD HAS ONE PRPOSE FOR US

“If you think you have come to the mission field because you are a little better than others, or as the cream of your church, or because of your medical degree, or for the service you can render the African church, or even for the souls you may see saved, you will fail. Remember, the Lord has only one purpose ultimately for each one of us, to make us more like Jesus. He is interested in your relationship with Himself. Let Him take you and mould you as He will; all the rest will take its rightful place.”

- Helen Rosevere (1925–2016) English Christian Missionary, Doctor and Author

GOD NEVER USES A PERSON GREATLY

"God never uses a person greatly until He has wounded him deeply."

- Helen Rosevere (1925–2016) English Christian Missionary, Doctor and Author

THE PRIVILEDGE HE OFFERS YOU

"The privilege He offers you is greater than the price you have to pay. The privilege is greater than the price."

- Helen Rosevere (1925–2016) English Christian Missionary, Doctor and Author

WE ARE CALLED TO REFLECT

"We are called to reflect the Lord's beauty through our lives as much as through our words, and God will use this in His own perfect time."

- Helen Rosevere (1925–2016) English Christian Missionary, Doctor and Author

LEARN THE SECRET OF HAPPY

“When would I learn the secret of happy, contented teamwork? Why did I always want to be the last link? If I would love the Lord with all my mind, I had to give Him all that I thought I knew or could do, and be willing for Him to place me anywhere within the team to do any job He chose for me. Only then would I experience true peace of mind.”

- Helen Rosevere (1925–2016) English Christian Missionary, Doctor and Author

HIS GRACE ALWAYS PROVES SUFFICIENT

“Together we learned why God has given us His name as "I AM" (Exodus 3:14). His grace always proved itself sufficient in the moment of need, but never before the necessary time, and rarely afterwards. As I anticipated suffering in my imagination and thought of what these cruel soldiers would do next, I quivered with fear. I broke out in a cold sweat of horror. As I heard them drive into our village, day or night, my mouth would go dry: my heart would miss a beat. Fear gripped me in an awful vice. But when the moment came for action, He gave me a quiet, cool exterior that He used to give others courage too: He filled me with a peace and an assurance about what to say or do that amazed me and often defeated the immediate tactics of the enemy.”

THIS NEW BIRTH IN CHRIST

"This new birth in Christ, thus firmly believed and continually desired, will do everything that thou wantest to have done in thee, it will dry up all the springs of vice, stop all the workings of evil in thy nature, it will bring all that is good into thee, it will open all the gospel within thee, and thou wilt know what it is to be taught of God."

HOWARD G. HENDRICKS (1924–2013)

Howard G. Hendricks (1924–2013) Theological Seminary Professor

ABOUT WILLIAM ROMAINE

Howard George Hendricks (April 5, 1924 – February 20, 2013) was a longtime professor at Dallas Theological Seminary and speaker for Promise Keepers. Upon his graduation from Dallas, Hendricks accepted the pastorate at Calvary Independent Presbyterian Church (now Calvary Bible Church) in Fort Worth, Texas. An opening on the seminary staff led Hendricks to begin teaching twice per week in the fall of 1951. After one year on staff, Hendricks resigned his post to pursue a doctorate at Yale University. However, the founder and president of Dallas Theological Seminary, Lewis Sperry Chafer, died and the new president, John Walvoord, asked Hendricks to delay his doctorate and return to Dallas as a teacher.

For over fifty years, Howard G. Hendricks was a professor at Dallas Theological Seminary, where he taught "Bible Exposition and Hermeneutics" to freshmen. He mentored many Christian leaders, including Chuck Swindoll, Tony Evans, Joseph Stowell, Robert Jeffress, Chip Ingram and David Jeremiah.

He was a keynote speaker for Promise Keepers and authored sixteen books. He ministered in over 80 countries, and he also served as chaplain for the Dallas Cowboys football team from 1976 to 1984.

In 1986, the Howard G. Hendricks Center for Christian Leadership opened on the Dallas Theological Seminary campus. This ministry attempts to develop Christian leaders and future church curricula through a process of mentoring.

ARMY OF ENDEAVOR

Army of Endeavor, bear the trumpet call;
'Gainst the foe advancing, forward one and all!

Christ is our Commander; faithful let us be:
He will give to us the victory!

Refrain

Though the battle rages, what have we to fear?

In the wildest conflict, He is ever near.
Trusting in our Leader, faithful let us be:
He will give the victory!

In His royal service, there's a work for all,
Cheering on the faint ones, lifting those that fall;

Unto Him Who calls us ever faithful be:
He will give to us the victory!

Ever pressing onward in the cause of right,
Holding up the banner, walking in the light;
Keeping His commandments, great rewards have we!

He will give to us the victory!

19. J. H. Jowett (1864-1923)

ABOUT J. H. JOWETT

John Henry Jowett CH (25 August 1864 – 19 December 1923) was an influential British Protestant preacher at the turn of the nineteenth to the twentieth century who wrote books on topics related to Christian living. Warren W. Wiersbe called him "The greatest preacher in the English speaking world."

Early life

Jowett was born 25 August 1864 at Beaumont Town, Northowram in Halifax, West Yorkshire to working-class parents who attended the Congregational church in Halifax. Jowett's father was a tailor and draper.

Career and influence

Jowett was influenced by Enoch Mellor who was incumbent at Square Road Congregational Church, Halifax, between 1867 and 1881, and determined to become a preacher.

Jowett understood the problems faced by workers and while the pastor at Carr's Lane Congregational Church in Birmingham, England, founded the Digbeth Institute, now an arts center. While at Carr's Lane Jowett was elected chairman of the Congregational Union and president of the National Council of Evangelical Free Churches.

Jowett served at the Presbyterian Church, Fifth Avenue, New York, from 1911 to 1918, then Westminster Chapel from 1918 to 1922, when he retired due to ill-health, and died the following year.

In the 1922 Dissolution Honours as suggested by David Lloyd George to King George V, Jowett was made one of the 50 Companions of Honour, along with Winston Churchill.

LIFE WITHOUT THANKFULNESS

“Life without thankfulness is devoid of love and passion. Hope without thankfulness is lacking in fine perception. Faith without thankfulness lacks strength and fortitude. Every virtue divorced from thankfulness is maimed and limps along the spiritual road.”

ABOUT J. R . MILLER

QUOTES BY J. R . MILLER

CHRIST IS BUILDING HIS KINGDOM WITH EARTH'S BROKEN THINGS

"Christ is building His kingdom with earth's broken things. Men want only the strong, the successful, the victorious, the unbroken, in building their kingdoms; but God is the God of the unsuccessful, of those who have failed. Heaven is filling with earth's broken lives, and there is no bruised reed that Christ cannot take and restore to glorious blessedness and beauty. He can take the life crushed by pain or sorrow and make it into a harp whose music shall be all praise. He can lift earth's saddest failure up to heaven's glory."

- J. R. Miller (1840-1912) Christian Author and Pastor

GOD...MADE CHILDHOOD JOYOUS

"God...made childhood joyous, full of life, bubbling over with laughter, playful, bright and sunny. We should put into their childhood days just as much sunshine and gladness, just as much cheerful pleasure as possible. Pour in the sunshine about them in youth. Let them be happy, encourage all innocent joy, provide pleasant games for them, romp and play with them; be a child again among them. Then God's blessing will come upon your home, and your children will grow up sunny-hearted, gentle, affectionate, joyous themselves and joy-bearers to the world."

Words to Think About...

IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO ESTIMATE

"It is impossible to estimate full influence of the reading of the Word in a home day after day and year after year. It filters into the hearts of the young. It is absorbed into their souls. It colors all their thoughts. It is wrought into the very fiber of their minds. It imbues them with its own spirit. It’s holy teachings become the principles of their lives, which rule their conduct and shape all their actions."

- J. R. Miller (1840-1912) Christian Author and Pastor

AN IMMORTAL SOUL

"An immortal soul, from its very nature, cannot find what it needs anywhere except in God Himself. True religion begins in the heart. It is not a mere set of rules to be obeyed-an example to be copied. It is Christ coming into the heart and dwelling there."

- J. R. Miller (1840-1912) Christian Author and Pastor

MOTHERS OF YOUNG CHILDREN

"Mothers of young children, your work is most holy. You are fashioning the destinies of immortal souls. The powers folded up in the little ones that you hushed to sleep in your bosoms last night, are powers that shall exist forever. You are preparing them for their immortal destiny and influence. Be faithful. Take up your sacred burden reverently. Be sure that your heart is pure and that your life is sweet and clean."

- J. R. Miller (1840-1912) Christian Author and Pastor

LIFE IS A BUILDING

"Life is a building. It rises slowly, day by day throughout the years. Every new lesson we learn lays a block on the edifice, which is rising silently within us. Every experience, every touch of another life on ours, every influence that impresses us, every book we read, every conversation we hear, every act of our commonest days, adds something to the invisible building."

- J. R. Miller (1840-1912) Christian Author and Pastor

A VERSE OF SCRIPTURE

"A verse of Scripture in the morning, may become a blessing for all the day. It may sing in the heart as a sweet song, from morning until evening. It may become a liturgy of prayer in which the soul shall voice its deepest needs and hungers-amid toils, struggles, and cares. It may be a guide through perplexing tangles, Gods voice whispering cheer, a comforter breathing peace in sorrow."

THE REVELATION OF GOD IN NATURE

“The Bible says that the revelation of God in nature condemns us for our failure to recognize Him. Romans 1:18–20 (NIV) says that “the wrath of God” is being revealed from heaven against all people because “since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.” No one has ever come to our Lord Jesus Christ through nature alone.”

THE WORLD'S THEOLOGY

"The world's theology is easy to define. It is the view that human beings are basically good, that no one is really lost, that belief in Jesus Christ is not necessary for salvation."

23. Jarena Lee Trailblazing (1783-1864)

Jarena Lee Trailblazing (1783-1864) African American Preacher

ABOUT

Jarena Lee (February 11, 1783 – February 3, 1864 was the first woman preacher in the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME). orn into a free Black family, in New Jersey, Lee asked the founder of the AME church, Richard Allen, to be a preacher. Although Allen initially refused, after hearing her preach in 1819, Allen approved her preaching ministry. A leader in the Wesleyan-Holiness movement, Lee preached the doctrine of entire sanctification as an itinerant pastor throughout the pulpits of the African Methodist Episcopal denomination. In 1836, Lee became the first African American woman to publish her autobiography.

Early life

Jarena Lee was born on February 11, 1783, in Cape May, New Jersey, according to the details she published later in life in an autobiography. She recounts that she was born into a free black family, but from the age of 7, she began to work as a live-in servant with a white family. Not much detail is known of her family or her early life. As a teenager, she moved from New Jersey to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where she continued in domestic service.

Lee later recalled that she did not receive religious instruction as a child. When she was older, however, she was introduced to Christian teachings during religious revivals, and felt herself to be a "wretched sinner." She recounts that she struggled with suicidal thoughts and fantasized about drowning herself on at least several occasions. Through prayer, she finally felt justified and was baptized. After three months of constant prayer, she felt that she had been fully sanctified by the Holy Spirit.

Call to preach

She soon started hearing voices telling her to "Go preach the Gospel! Preach the Gospel; I will put words in your mouth." Lee then told Richard Allen that God had spoken to her and commanded her to preach, but Allen said that there was no provision for women preachers in the Methodist Church. This did not stop Lee from pursuing her call. "If the man may preach, because the Savior died for him, why not the woman, seeing he died for her also? Is he not a whole Savior, instead of half of one?" Allen still refused, but eight years later during a Sunday service at the Mother Bethel the preacher seemed to lose spirit. Lee stepped up and began to preach, the crowd was very intrigued to what she had to say.  Religious belief, especially in God's divine protection, became a source of self empowerment for Lee. In rebuttal to questions on a female ministry, she responded, "Did not Mary first preach the risen Savior?". The idea that African Americans and women could preach was an element of the Second Great Awakening, which reached its peak as Lee began her missionary work.

Lee left behind an account of her religious experience. The publishing of her autobiography made Lee the first African American woman to have an autobiography published in the United States. Despite Richard Allen's blessing, Lee continued to face hostility to her ministry because she was black and a woman. She became a traveling minister, traveling thousands of miles on foot. In one year alone, she "travelled two thousand three hundred and twenty-five miles, and preached one hundred and seventy-eight sermons."

Converting a non-believer

In the Religious Experience and Journal of Mrs. Jarena Lee there is a story she tells of young man who would ridicule her for what she preached, because he did not believe in God or religion. He was a person of color who would regularly attend her meetings. As time passed he grew ill. The young man's sister, who was a part of the society, called upon Lee to not help him to recover, but in hopes that the Lord would enter into his mind. When Lee went to visit she saw the young man in a very low state. She asked him if he wanted her to pray for him and he replied yes. Although he never recovered, the young man continued to ask for her to be at his bed side to pray for him.

Marriage

Lee came to Philadelphia as a teenager and was changed when she heard a passionate sermon given by Richard Allen. She married Joseph Lee in 1811, seven years after joining Philadelphia's Mother Bethel. Joseph Lee was a pastor of a Society at Snow Hill. Snow Hill was six miles from Philadelphia. Lee moved to Snow Hill with her husband, but was unsure because she knew no one there besides her husband. She found at Snow Hill that she did not find the same closeness that she had in Philadelphia. During their marriage her husband did not want her to preach, so she felt forced to put her spiritual needs on hold for her marriage. It is said that her not being fully committed to her spiritual needs resulted in Lee becoming ill and a sense of discontent. Joseph Lee died six years into their marriage. Soon after Lee was fully devoted to religious concerns, but her ill health never recovered.

Legacy

Lee is recognized as being the first woman to preach in the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church. Her life story exemplifies the 19th-century American religious movement's focus on personal holiness and sanctification. She has been compared to influential African American women of her time, such as Maria W. Stewart and Sojourner Truth. In the decades after Jarena Lee became a preacher, other women such as Juliann Jane Tillman gained prominence as evangelists within the AME Church.

Much of what is known about Lee's life comes from her autobiographical memoir, The Life and Religious Experience of Jarena Lee and its expanded version, Religious Experience and Journal of Mrs. Jarena Lee. Extensive archival research by Dr. Frederick Knight has revealed that Jarena Lee died penniless in Philadelphia sometime in early 1864.

Jarena Lee is also currently the subject of a research project at Harvard Divinity School entitled "The Resurrection of Jarena Lee." Womanist Biblical scholar Nyasha Junior is involved with this project.

WHAT IS MAN?

"What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him? "

- Psalms 8:4

24. LORENZO Scupoli (c. 1530-1610)

L. Scupoli (c. 1530-1610) Italian Catholic Writer

ABOUT LORENZO SCUPOLI

Lorenzo (Lawrence) Scupoli (ca. 1530 – 28 November 1610) was the author of Il combattimento spirituale (The Spiritual Combat), one of the most important works of Catholic spirituality.

Life

Scupoli was from Otranto in Apulia. At baptism, he received the name Francesco (Francis). Being already at a mature age in 1569, he joined the Theatines. He took Holy Orders exceptionally fast, after eight years.

In 1585 he was accused of breaking the rule. He was arrested for a year and deprived of the priestly faculties. Finally he was exculpated from blame, but he had to wait for it almost till his death. He endured the injust accusations and punishments with humility, sacrificing the suffering for various intentions.

The Spiritual Combat

Il combattimento Spirituale The Spiritual Combat

In 1589 in Venice the first edition of the work of his life was printed. At once it gained huge esteem and became a bestseller. During the first 20 years it was published 60 times and translated into German, Latin, French, English and Spanish. Next there were made Portuguese, Croatian, Polish, Armenian, Greek (by Nicodemus the Hagiorite), Arabian and Japanese versions. In the 19th century, Russian monk Theophanes extensively revised it, writing Unseen Warfare, a book which was influential in the Eastern Orthodox Church. To date there have been as many as 600 editions of The Spiritual Combat.

The Combat is a practical manual of living. At first it teaches that the sense of life is incessant fighting against egoistic longings and replacing them with sacrifice and charity. The one who does not do this loses, and suffers in Hell; the one who does it, trusting not in his own, but God's power, triumphs and is happy in Heaven. The work of Scupoli analyses various usual situations and advises how to cope with them, preserving a pure conscience and improving virtue. It emphasizes also the boundless goodness of God, which is the cause of all good. What is bad originates from the human who rebels against God.

QUOTES BY LORENZO SCUPOLI

WHEN YOU ARE OFFENDED BY OTHERS

"When you are offended or annoyed by others, do not allow your thoughts to dwell on them or on anything relating to them. For example, don't think that they ought not to have treated you so, being who they are, or whom they think themselves to be, or the like. All this is fuel and kindling of wrath, anger, and hatred."

- Lorenzo Scupoli

YOU SHOULD ALWAYS SAY YOUR PRAYERS

"You should always say your prayers with tireless diligence, as the Apostle directs, saying: 'Continue in prayer and watch in the same' (Col. 4:2). For humble patience, tirelessness and persistence in prayer conquer the unconquerable God and incline Him to mercy."

WATCH YOURSELF WITH DILLIGENCE

"Watch yourself with all diligence, lest the enemy steals near and robs you, depriving you of this great treasure, which is inner peace and stillness of soul. The enemy strives to destroy the peace of the soul, because he knows that when the soul is in turmoil it is more easily led to evil. But you must guard your peace."

- Lorenzo Scupoli

How Can I Be Saved?

You’ve probably seen John 3:16 posted somewhere on a sign, written on a freeway overpass, at a concert, at a sporting event, or even read to you as a little child. This verse is a simple one. There are 20 monosyllables (single words) in the verse. The Gospel is meant to be simple for everyone!

Be sure of your Salvation. Right now, and pray this simple prayer with a sincere heart...
“Lord, forgive me for my sins. I confess that I am a sinner. Come into my heart and make me the person you created me to be. I receive your gift of pardon through Jesus dying for me on the cross to save me. – Amen”

It was once determined in a court of law that a pardon is only a pardon when it is accepted. There is a true story about a man that refused his pardon. A judge ruled that a pardon is only a pardon when it is accepted. When you prayed that prayer and accepted God’s pardon for your sins, you became a new creation in Christ.

The Bible teaches that you are saved by faith through Jesus. Grow in the Grace that was just given to you, seek God in His word (The Bible) and go out tell somebody!
