HIS COURT FORGOT TO ASK FOR GOD'S BLESSING

There was once a good king in Spain called Alfonso XII. Now it came to the ears of this king that the pages at his court forgot to ask God’s blessing on their daily meals, and he determined to rebuke them. He invited them to a banquet, which they all attended. The table was spread with every kind of good food, and the boys ate with evident relish; but not one of them remembered to ask God’s blessing on the food.

During the feast a beggar entered, dirty and ill-clad. He seated himself at the royal table and ate and drank to his heart’s content. At first the pages were amazed, and they expected that the king would order him away. But Alfonso never said a word.

When the beggar had finished, he rose and left without a word of thanks. Then the boys could keep silence no longer. "What a despicably mean fellow!" they cried. But the king silenced them, and in clear, calm tones he said, "Boys, bolder and more audacious than this beggar have you all been. Every day you sit down to a table supplied by the bounty of your heavenly Father, yet you ask not His blessing nor express to Him your gratitude."

Napoleon Bonaparte made a lonely surprise visit one night to the outpost sentries on one of the vital positions of his battlefield. Stealthily he moved along in the gray light of the morning. Finally, the corn stirred, and up jumped the guilty defender and grabbed for the gun that was gone.

- John 15:13

GAVE HIMSELF UP FOR US

- Ephesians 5:2

WHAT SACRIFICE MEANS

"Faith is not an instinct. It certainly is not a feeling - feelings don't help much when you're in the lions' den or hanging on a wooden Cross. Faith is not inferred from the happy way things work. It is an act of will, a choice, based on the unbreakable Word of a God who cannot lie, and who showed us what love and obedience and sacrifice mean, in the person of Jesus Christ."

- Elisabeth Elliot (1926-2015) Christian Missionary and Writer

I DESIRE MERCY, NOT SACRIFICE

"But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners."

- Matthew 9:13

READY TO SACRIFICE ANYTHING

"Prayer is reaching out after the unseen; fasting is letting go of all that is seen and temporal. Fasting helps express, deepen, confirm the resolution that we are ready to sacrifice anything, even ourselves to attain what we seek for the kingdom of God."

- Andrew Murray (1794-1866) Scottish Missionary, Writer

WHO GAVE HIMSELF TO REDEEM US

"Who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good."

- Titus 2:14

PEOPLE TALK OF SACRIFICE

"People talk of the sacrifice I have made in spending so much of my life in Africa. It is emphatically no sacrifice. Say rather it is a privilege."

- David Livingstone (1813-1873) British Physician and Missionary

IT IS THE CRY OF A BROKEN HEART

- Samuel Chadwick (1860-1932) Wesleyan Methodist Minister

THE LORD BINDS UP THE BROKENNESS OF HIS PEOPLE

"Moreover, the light of the moon will be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun will be sevenfold, as the light of seven days, in the day when the LORD binds up the brokenness of his people, and heals the wounds inflicted by his blow."

- Isaiah 30:26

HE MAY GIVE YOU A BROKEN HEART

"Learn this lesson: not to trust Christ because you repent, but trust Christ to make you repent; not to come to Christ because you have a broken heart, but to come to Him that He may give you a broken heart; not to come to Him because you are fit to come, but to come to Him because you are unfit to come. Your fitness is your unfitness. Your qualification is your lack of qualification."

- Charles Spurgeon (1834-1892) English Baptist Preacher

LET THE BONES YOU HAVE BROKEN REJOICE

Make me to hear joy and gladness, let the bones which You have broken rejoice."

- Psalm 51:8

- Harry Ironside (1876-1951) American Bible Teacher, Theologian

THE LIFE OF MAN IS A BROKEN PILLAR

"Only those who have learned well to be earnestly dissatisfied with themselves, and to be confounded with shame at their wretchedness truly understand the Christian gospel."

- John Calvin (1509-1564) French Theologian

WHEN OUTWARD STRENGTH IS BROKEN

"Faith makes all evil good to us, and all good better; unbelief makes all good evil, and all evil worse. Faith laughs at the shaking of the spear; unbelief trembles at the shaking of a leaf, unbelief starves the soul; faith finds food in famine, and a table in the wilderness. In the greatest danger, faith says, "I have a great God." When outward strength is broken, faith rests on the promises. In the midst of sorrow, faith draws the sting out of every trouble, and takes out the bitterness from every affliction."

- Richard Cecil (1748–1810) Evangelical Anglican Clergyman

REVIVE HEARTS OF THE CONTRITE

For thus says the high and exalted One Who lives forever, whose name is Holy, I dwell on a high and holy place, and also with the contrite and lowly of spirit in order to revive the spirit of the lowly. And to revive the heart of the contrite."

- Isaiah 57:15

A CHRISTIAN SHOULD HAVE A BROKEN SPIRIT

Words to Think About...

GOD USES BROKEN THINGS

"God uses broken things. It takes broken soil to produce a crop, broken clouds to give rain, broken grain to give bread, broken bread to give strength. It is the broken alabaster box that gives forth perfume. It is Peter, weeping bitterly, who returns to greater power than ever."

- Psalm 51:16-17

THE FLESH MUST BE BROKEN

"The flesh must be broken. The Lord can use us then, not while it is unbroken. While Paul was writhing under Satan's thorn, he could get some estimate, though not a full one, of what the flesh is as God sees it. When it was broken, and Paul did not know what to do, the Lord came to pour sympathy into the writhing heart of Paul."

- Elisabeth Elliot (1926-2015) Christian Missionary and Writer

THE SUREST WAY TO KNOW OUR GOLD

"The surest way to know our gold is to look upon it and examine it in God's furnace, where He tries it that we may see what it is. If we have a mind to know whether a building stands strong or no, we must look upon it when the wind blows. If we would know whether a staff be strong, or a rotten, broken reed, we must observe it when it is leaned on and weight is borne upon it. If we would weigh ourselves justly we must weigh ourselves in God's scales that he makes use of to weigh us."

- Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758) American Revivalist

GOD LOVES A BROKEN HEART

- Genesis 18:20-21

YOU SHALL NOT LIE WITH A MAN AS WITH A WOMAN

"You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination. THAT EVENING THE TWO ANGELS CAME TO THE CITY

"That evening the two angels came to the entrance of the city of Sodom. Lot was sitting there, and when he saw them, he stood up to meet them. Then he welcomed them and bowed with his face to the ground. My lords, he said, come to my home to wash your feet, and be my guests for the night. You may then get up early in the morning and be on your way again. Oh no, they replied. We'll just spend the night out here in the city square. But Lot insisted, so at last they went home with him. Lot prepared a feast for them, complete with fresh bread made without yeast, and they ate. But before they retired for the night, all the men of Sodom, young and old, came from all over the city and surrounded the house. They shouted to Lot, where are the men who came to spend the night with you? Bring them out to us so we can have sex with them! So Lot stepped outside to talk to them, shutting the door behind him. Please, my brothers, he begged, don't do such a wicked thing. Look, I have two virgin daughters. Let me bring them out to you, and you can do with them as you wish. But please, leave these men alone, for they are my guests and are under my protection. Stand back! they shouted. This fellow came to town as an outsider, and now he's acting like our judge! We'll treat you far worse than those other men!" And they lunged toward Lot to break down the door. But the two angels reached out, pulled Lot into the house, and bolted the door. Then they blinded all the men, young and old, who were at the door of the house, so they gave up trying to get inside."

"The place God calls you to is where your deep gladness and the world's deep hunger meet."

- Frederick Buechner (1926-2022) American Presbyterian Minister

THE TIME AND PLACE OF PRAYER

"How many there are whose lives are weak and whose service is poor and ineffective, just because they have not zealously guarded the time and place of prayer!"

- Duncan Campbell (1898-1972) Scottish Evangelist

THE DWELLING PLACE OF GOD

"Our lives are full of supposes. Suppose this should happen, or suppose that should happen; what could we do; how could we bear it? But, if we are living in the high tower of the dwelling place of God, all these supposes will drop out of our lives. We shall be quiet from the fear of evil, for no threatenings of evil can penetrate into the high tower of God."

- Hannah Whitall Smith (1832-1911) American Evangelist and Reformer

For Then There Will Be Great Tribulation

"For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, and never will be" - Matthew 24:21

The Bible teaches that after a period of seven years of tribulation on earth, Christ will return to the earth with His church and the saints who were raptured (Matthew 24:30, 2 Thessalonians 1:7, 1 Peter 1:13, Revelation 1:7). Jesus Christ will be victorious over His enemies and will reign on the earth for 1,000 years (the millennium) with His people.

BUT IMMEDIATLEY AFTER THE TRIBULATION

“But immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken."

- Matthew 24:29

THESE ARE THE ONES COMING OUT OF THE GREAT TRIBULATION

I said to him, “Sir, you know.” And he said to me, “These are the ones coming out of the great tribulation. They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb."

- Revelation 7:14

FOR GOD HAS NOT DESTINED US FOR WRATH

"For God has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ."

- 1 Thessalonians 5:9

MAY HE DELIVER ME OUT OF ALL TRIBULATION

"Behold, as your life was precious this day in my sight, so may my life be precious in the sight of the LORD, and may he deliver me out of all tribulation.”

- 1 Samuel 26:24

I WILL KEEP YOU FROM THE HOUR OF TROUBLE

"Because you have kept my word about patient endurance, I will keep you from the hour of trial that is coming on the whole world, to try those who dwell on the earth."

- Revelation 3:10

I WILL THROW INTO GREAT TRIBULATION

"Behold, I will throw her onto a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her I will throw into great tribulation, unless they repent of her works."

- Revelation 2:22

GOD, WHO FORESAW YOUR TRIBULATION

"God, who foresaw your tribulation, has specially armed you to go through it, not without pain but without stain."

- C. S. Lewis (1898-1963) Irish Writer and Scholar

IF A CHRISTIAN IS NOT HAVING TRIBULATION

"If a Christian is not having tribulation in the world, there's something wrong!"

- Leonard Ravenhill (1907-1994) English Christian Evangelist

THE MUCH TRIBUALTION WILL SOON BE OVER

"Troubled soul, the "much tribulation" will soon be over, and as you enter the "kingdom of God" you shall then see, no longer "through a glass darkly" but in the unshadowed sunlight of the Divine presence, that "all things" did "work together" for your personal and eternal good."

- A. W. Pink (1886-1952) English Bible Teacher

IN THE WORLD YOU WILL HAVE TRIBULATION

"I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world."

- John 16:33

Words to Think About...

THEN I SAW THRONES

"Then I saw thrones, and seated on them were those to whom the authority to judge was committed. Also I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for the testimony of Jesus and for the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or its image and had not received its mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years."

- Revelation 20:4

BE PATIENT IN TRIBULATION

"Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer."

- Romans 12:12

FALL ON US AND HIDE US

Calling to the mountains and rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who is seated on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb."

- Revelation 6:16

AFTER THIS I LOOKED, AND BEHOLD

"After this I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven! And the first voice, which I had heard speaking to me like a trumpet, said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.”

- Revelation 4:1

TRIBULATION WORKETH PATIENCE

"Tribulation worketh patience; and patience, experience; and experience, hope." That is the order. You cannot put patience and experience into a parenthesis, and, omitting them, bring hope out of tribulation."

- Alexander MacLaren (1826-1919) President Baptist World Congress

TO BEAR TRIBULATION COURAGEOUSLY

"Nothing but encouragement can come to us as we dwell upon the faithful dealing of our Heavenly Father in centuries gone by. Faith in God has not saved people from hardships and trials, but it has enabled them to bear tribulations courageously and to emerge victoriously."

- Lee Roberson (1909-2007) American Pastor and Evangelist

IF THERE WERE NO TRIBULATION

"If there were no tribulation, there would be no rest; if there were no winter, there would be no summer."

- John Chrysostom (347-407) Archbishop, Early Church Father

How Can I Be Saved?

You’ve probably seen John 3:16 posted somewhere on a sign, written on a freeway overpass, at a concert, at a sporting event, or even read to you as a little child. This verse is a simple one. There are 20 monosyllables (single words) in the verse. The Gospel is meant to be simple for everyone!

Be sure of your Salvation. Right now, and pray this simple prayer with a sincere heart...
“Lord, forgive me for my sins. I confess that I am a sinner. Come into my heart and make me the person you created me to be. I receive your gift of pardon through Jesus dying for me on the cross to save me. – Amen”

It was once determined in a court of law that a pardon is only a pardon when it is accepted. There is a true story about a man that refused his pardon. A judge ruled that a pardon is only a pardon when it is accepted. When you prayed that prayer and accepted God’s pardon for your sins, you became a new creation in Christ.

The Bible teaches that you are saved by faith through Jesus. Grow in the Grace that was just given to you, seek God in His word (The Bible) and go out tell somebody!
